As if labels with a romantic interest aren’t difficult enough already! As a 30-year-old blogger who’s watched too many episodes of Sex and the City….

Included in the number who totally disagree is the guy I’m dating/seeing. Do you think my point of view on this is dated (pun intended) and I should change it to reflect dating in this app area?

It's hardly news that conventional dating norms have gone out the window and, with them, so too have traditional dating labels.

"Boyfriend" and "girlfriend" seem to share the same fate as the now arcane "going steady." People are still dating -- sure -- but recently, would-be couples less readily refer to one another as "boyfriend" or "girlfriend," opting instead for basic , sans label.

If your biggest need is, like mine, to be “intellectually understood,” then you must first soothe your compulsion to have everything “received.”And regardless of our biggest need, the next steps of effective emotional management is to: be fair in what we ask of others, clearly state our needs, and accept our partner’s efforts to honor them.

The fallout (or perhaps, benefit) from this aversion to labels remains to be seen.

But suddenly I feel lost on the girls’ brunch staple: Instead of consulting Urban Dictionary, I asked Facebook and Twitter. I considered standing on a street corner and asking NYC strangers but a blizzard made me scrap that idea. I certainly think of DATING and SEEING as different in my mind. The conclusion of my (extremely) limited study (“study”) was a shockingly even divide between the two camps. Or maybe I’ll just slip on some elbow length gloves every time I sit down to blog, and tell you I’m not old-fashioned. Which one do you think is less casual: “Dating” or “Seeing”?

He thinks we’re seeing each other, I think we’re dating: Communication Fail. We’re both on the same page, just uh, looking at different words? So I gave this stupid syntax wayyyyy more thought than it ever deserved.

I’m a writer, I think that’s why this confusion bothers me.

Indeed, labels are often black and white, imposing undesirable norms upon huge swaths of people to whom rigid conventions cannot and should not be applied. I mean, honestly, why is it such a big deal to call someone your boyfriend or girlfriend?

  1. Their free hour-long test is fascinating to help you determine compatibility markers, however, there's zero way to tell if the person you're matched with also has an account, and therefore can reply to your questions.
